Retrenchment during Booming Economy?

Welcome to Daniel's Blog! You make my Day!

While the Singapore economy is booming, there are still people been retrenched. One of my friends is facing the retrenchment by the end of the month. He is working for a major MNC and listed in Nasdaq and SG. My friend has worked for this company for a long time (like 10 years) and loyal servant to this major MNC company.

At the age of near 40s, he is worried if he can get a job in the market. He has to worry as he has to support his family too! It makes me worried to see this happening too! during booming economy Will we survive after retrenchment after 40s? With the great number of foreigners influx, there will be more challenges ahead to compete to get a good job! I think that we have to be persistent and get more ready than before! We have to constantly make ourself valuable and needed all the times with our past job experiences!

Today, there is a article in The Straits Times to lift the cap of the foreigner workers in a company. This will create more competition for Singaporean to find a good job!

majority of the companies in singapore do not look forward to hiring mature people unless they have very specific skill sets. And unless the singaporean is willing and bale to look beyond the horizion of the singapore shores, then they simply stuck to the basic retirement jobs like taxi driving or working at the macdonald fast food locations.
Its simply a shame that the the many people with so much experiences are not being used and simply wasted. Given that singapore relies on human resources for business, i think the govt can help in many ways. Not in the way the parent helps the child but to provide training to help the citizen exploit the way they think. Everyone cannot be forever an employee but we need to somehow grow our Entreprenuer spirits!!!

It is sad companies are hiring younger people to take over the more experienced's job. It is understandable profit margins are getting smaller every year, but by saving little does not necessary save much. It may even result in more losses in the long run.

Mature employees may require re-training to help them to adjust to the changing working environment, technologies. If the immediate solution is the retrench them and hire more experienced employees, the existing pool of employees will feel threatened as well, for they fear they may be the next to go.

I think we need to prepare ourselves ahead! We need to think hard! What is next for us?

As Wolfman suggested "Taxi driver"? Why not! It is a good idea!

We need to explore more options! Teacher/consultant/adviser/
Teleconsultant? Let's think!

But where can our lifetime working experiences bring us to? Is it a worthless experiences in working life. Nowsaday, works is like Trend and fashion! It keep changing! Work today and No work tommorrow!

How can we follow the trend? Can we create the Trend in order to increase our survival in the longer run!

I have been thinking hard! Currently, there is only one thing in mind!

WORK TILL WE GO TO GROUND!
